According to police, the man – who police say had been drinking – lunged at Harrelson after the actor approached him and asked him to delete a slew of photos he had taken of him and his daughter.

Harrelson “approached the man and requested that the photos be removed,” Dustin Sternbeck, director of communications for the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department, said in a statement following the incident, which occurred minutes after 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

The man then attacked Harrelson, who responded by punching the man intently before he could deliver a punch.

A large number of customers in the sophisticated rooftop lounge witnessed the attack, investigators say.
