Australia Post reveals EXACTLY when to send your Christmas hampers – as experts warn of major delays
- Australian Post warns people not to send Christmas packages at the beginning of this year
- Covid-19 restrictions had contributed to recent system delays
- Parcel parcels must be sent before December 13th and Express Post before December 20th
- Australians expect to exceed 52 million parcels shipped by 2020 this year
Australia Post has warned individuals and families to post Christmas gifts as early as possible as it has announced the exact dates for parcels to be sent to reach loved ones before December 25.
The postal service expects one of its busiest seasons ever as Australia moves out of the Covid lockdown restrictions.
“We’ve added a lot of capacity and we’re adding more team members at the moment to get ready for the Christmas season, but it’s been a challenging time and we’re working very hard to get each package to its destination as quickly as possible,” said Gary Starr , general manager of Australia Post, told ABC.
Australians shipped more than 52 million packages last year and are expected to exceed that number as 2021 draws to a close.

For most places in Australia, the cut-off dates for parcels to reach family and friends on Christmas Day are December 13 for parcel post and December 20 for express.
“We will deliver items shipped after these dates as soon as we can, but they may not arrive until after Christmas,” Australia Post warned.
For letters and cards sent by regular mail between the states, the most important date is Thursday, December 16. Letters and cards sent within the same state will still arrive there on Christmas Day if posted on or before Monday, December 20.
For most customers shipping within Australia, the delivery deadlines for sending parcels are Monday, December 13 for Parcel Post and Monday, December 20 for Express Post.
The dates are even earlier for residents of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, who are advised to ship parcels before December 8 for Parcel Post and December 15 for Express Post.
For those who send letters and parcels to international destinations, the dates are even earlier, but vary depending on the country. International closing dates by country can be searched on the Australia Post website.

“We’re seeing record parcel volumes with more than 5.9 million households shopping online per month and it’s showing no signs of slowing down as we head into the online sales season and Christmas,” Mr. Starr said in a statement.
He announced that Australia Post will increase air freight capacity over the weekend to meet demand and deliver until Christmas Eve.
The second wave of Covid-19 in Australia this year proved challenging for Australia Post’s deliveries. It stopped picking up packages in Melbourne late last month due to a backlog of orders and other disruptions caused by the city’s lockdown.
In Sydney, hundreds of logistics workers were forced to self-isolate after many were identified as having close contacts with a Covid-19 case.
