Oscar-nominated songwriter The Weeknd was named the United Nations World Food Program Goodwill Ambassador at a reception in West Hollywood on Thursday.

The 31-year-old Canadian son of Ethiopian immigrants has donated more than $4 million to charities in the past year, including $1 million to WFP’s relief efforts in Ethiopia.

“I feel passionate about tackling world hunger and helping those in need,” The Weeknd (née Abel Tesfaye) said in a statement.

The Weeknd and the 46-year-old humanitarian has hung out three times since June, with the most recent sighting being September 25 at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica.
