I often talk about how our skin is a great barometer of what’s going on in our gut and this is also true when it comes to acne. Unfortunately, it can be an incredibly complex skin condition to treat.

The skincare industry is awash with over-the-counter topical acne treatments that promise to cure acne. While prescription medications and topical products like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can certainly play a role in how we treat acne — especially if you’re working with a dermatologist to treat a more severe form of acne — they’re only one piece of the puzzle.

TIME TO LOOK AT YOUR DIET

A poor diet is just as damaging to our overall health and well-being as it is to our skin – causing damage and irritation to our gut. Gluten, dairy, refined sugars and carbohydrates, as well as an excess of red meat, alcohol, caffeine, additives, preservatives and artificial sweeteners can negatively affect our digestion and cause dysbiosis (or a balance of bacteria in our gut), inflammation and gut health problems.

Not surprisingly, these foods are also often linked to skin conditions such as acne in certain cases. It is important to note that you should never eliminate a food group without the direct and personal advice of a trusted health care provider – even if there is clinical evidence to show a link.

Although there is not yet strong clinical evidence showing that certain foods directly cause acne, there have been many review studies examining possible food culprits that exacerbate acne in some people.

For example, there is some evidence that the quality of carbohydrates consumed may play a role in the pathogenesis of acne. This is not surprising, as high GI carbohydrate sources can cause a spike in blood sugar and insulin levels.

Consequently, a spike in insulin has been linked to a rise in IGF-1, which has been shown to stimulate sebum production. It is therefore important to always consume small and balanced amounts of low GI carbohydrate sources with every meal to regulate and keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day.

A poor diet can disrupt our balanced gut microbiome. An unbalanced microbiome can cause systemic inflammation and gut permeability. This has been associated with a higher prevalence of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne.

What is Carla’s typical day on a plate?

My philosophy about food is similar to Michal Pollan’s: ‘eat food, not too much and mostly plants’. I eat a lot of whole foods, no processed foods – and make sure my plate is balanced.

AWAKE RITUAL

The health of our gut microbiome can have a big impact on how we respond to environmental allergens and food intolerances, so I make sure I have this health-supporting combination every day to boost my immunity.

BREAKFAST

I love to combine the joy of cooking with the science of nutrition, so when it comes to my recipes, both gut health and taste are always paramount. Depending on what’s in season, breakfast often consists of eggs, which I have with mushrooms, tomatoes, and salmon, or maybe a hearty bowl of porridge made with buckwheat, quinoa, miso, apple, and almonds.

LUNCH

Lunch can be anything from a salad with vegetables and proteins, or a piece of grilled or steamed fish with baked sweet potato and sauerkraut, a slow roast, a warming curry or a slow cooked soup or stew with lots of vegetables, herbs, spices and bone broth.

DINNER

An ideal dinner would look like organic free-range egg whites (which make up 25% of my plate), with colorful salads or vegetables (which make up 60% of the plate), drizzled with organic olive oil and lemon juice; healthy, low GI carbohydrates (which make up 15%). My main rule at all meals is to always have more vegetables than meat on my plate.

She started experimenting with lacto-fermenting skin-loving superfoods in her kitchen and that’s how it first came about.

Now the team is working with leading microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists to further expand the range and have built a loyal following around the world.

“It doesn’t sound very glamorous, but it’s in the gut that the seeds for health and beauty are planted,” said Carla.
