Student, 21, who suspected her online boyfriend is a catfish, discovers he is actually a Nigerian PRINCE

One woman who was suspicious of her one-year-old online boyfriend was Catfish because he never FaceTimed her. He was delighted to discover that her beauty was who he said he was, but he wanted to take it easy as he was a Nigerian prince.

Esther, 21, a fashion student from Nottingham, appeared on MTV’s Catfish UK last night after her best friend Anita approached the show with suspicions about Theo, who met Esther on Instagram.

Theo and Esther talk several times a day but have never FaceTimed or met in person, with Theo saying he can’t meet because he is in Nigeria on business and dodging his girlfriend’s phone calls.

Esther explained that she was in love with Theo and that, like her, he was from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, but also lived in the UK.

Despite the hosts saying that Theo showed all the signs of a classic catfish, Esther was delighted to find that Theo was who he said he was, but had kept it a secret that he was a prince because he wanted Esther to get to know him before it.

Viewers were thrilled with the result, with one writing, ‘Oh my gosh, actually a happy ending!’

Esther explained her suspicions to host Oobah Butler and Julie Adenuga, saying, “We’ve been talking for about a year. He never fails to send me a good morning or good evening message.

‘I love that so much. He’s so thoughtful, he calls me princess. I love it. I think he could be the one.

“If all goes well, it would make my dreams come true.

“He’s from the same tribe as me, which is very important. There are 200 million people in Nigeria, what are the chances I will find someone from the same tribe who is also cute?’ she continued.

“But he’s always in a meeting, when I try to video call, he doesn’t answer. We were on the phone once and I tried to transfer it to FaceTime and he hung up.’

She also explained that when she tried to meet Theo in person, he said he was in Nigeria on business.

Oobah is excited for their trip to Nottingham and tells Julie that they can ‘make her dreams come true’.

“She hooks up and sinks into this man,” Julie says.

“There are a lot of red flags, though,” Oobah warned.

The pair then examine Theo’s social media page and declare that it looks real.

They see a comment from a friend calling him a “brother” and message him, as well as another friend named Boli who is tagged with Theo in photos.

Julie and Oobah then video call Boli, who says the man in the photos is not Theo, but a man named Michael, and his business partner.

“Who the hell is Michael?” Oobah says.

“I’m speechless,” Julie added.

As they continue their research, they find a profile for Michael that is “much simpler than Theo’s.”

They also get a message from “Theo’s best friend” stating that he is very busy and asking them to stop investigating him because he “has a lot on his plate”.

Esther was shocked to learn the news and told Oobah and Juilie, ‘I speak to him every day, he hasn’t told me he has a lot on his plate. I don’t understand what he’s trying to hide.”

Oobah, frustrated at the lack of progress, sends Theo a link to discover his location and reveals that he is in South London, not Nigeria.

“He said he couldn’t meet because he’s in Nigeria, but if he’s been in London all this time, what’s he hiding?” asks Esther.

Julie then calls Theo to try and get an answer, but a woman answers his phone and then quickly hangs up, suspecting it’s a joke.

That was super weird, what about everyone we speak to creating this bizarre barrier around Theo? asks Oobah. “Whoever this is and what’s going on, they need to come up with concrete answers. I don’t think I’m starting to look good.”

At Julie’s suggestion, Esther sent Theo a message that they would come see him the next day.

“The only woman who answers your phone for you is your wife,” Julie adds.

“We need to be mentally ready to take her through the journey,” Oobah said before admitting he was nervous about going to London blind.

During the drive, Theo texted Esther to say that he had arrived in London from Nigeria yesterday and had given her an address to meet.

When Esther arrives at the address, she is shocked to discover that the man she spoke to is really Theo – who invites the team.

‘ If you don’t really know me, I said my name is Theo – which is actually my middle name and if you’re very good then I’ll say my first name is Michael.

He didn’t defend video calls and continued, “To be honest, I just didn’t have the time. I’m quite busy, I have three different business ventures.

“So to have the time to shoot even five minutes and ten minutes of video just wasn’t possible.

“The reasons I went back to Nigeria was because I went for my father’s death.

‘I was always on the move. There were always people in the house giving condolences or something, so I literally had to go for this event, go for this, go for that.

Theo then added that he was serious about pursuing something with Esther and that he is also a prince in Nigeria.

“I’ve been let down and disappointed before. I wanted you to know me before me.”

Unencumbered by his royal status, Esther said, “I’m a quiet princess too.”

When they caught up with Julie and Oobah three months after filming, the pair revealed they are still talking and plan to “make things official soon.”
