‘What Barcelona is this?’: Spanish newspapers lament the ‘terrible’ performance of Ronald Koeman’s men in the home game against Granada… as they are accused of ‘giving up’ their famous possession-based style

  • Barcelona saved a point against Granada thanks to Ronald Araujo’s header
  • The Uruguayan equalized in the 90th minute after Domingos Duarte’s opener
  • Boss Ronald Koeman was forced to defend the Catalan side’s direct play style
  • But the Spanish newspapers have criticized the approach and presentation on Monday evening

The Spanish press has criticized Barcelona’s ‘terrible’ performance in their draw against Granada at the Camp Nou, which has put pressure on besieged boss Ronald Koeman.

The Catalan giants needed a 90-minute equalizer from defender Ronaldo Araujo to save a point on home soil, after Domingos Duarte put the Andalusian side ahead within two minutes.

The result was not the only aspect of Barcelona’s performance to be criticized. Koeman had to defend his team’s direct playing style, with central defender Gerard Pique playing alongside Luuk de Jong in front.

It was a marked difference from the possession-based style associated with the club, and MARCA in particular was amazed at the tactics used by the under attack boss Koeman.

MARCA ran the headline, ‘What Barcelona is this?’, calling their display ‘terrible’.

They also add that Barcelona ‘gave up’ their traditional possession-based dominant style of play.

The Catalan newspaper SPORT had a slightly more positive headline, praising the performance of central defender Araujo, labeling him a ‘hero’ and ‘the key figure of the evening’.

The Uruguayan nodded to 17-year-old midfielder Gavi’s cross to save the Catalan side from an ’embarrassing’ defeat, but they also complained of Koeman admitting that ‘their days of tiki-taka are over’.

Equally disturbing was the fact that Barcelona once again “demonstrated their impotence and lack of resources” against Granada.

However, the Dutchman is under increasing pressure as a manager, with former midfielder Xavi, Andrea Pirlo, Antonio Conte and ex-Derby boss Phillip Cocu being linked with the job by reports in Spain.

But when asked how he thought the result might affect his prospects of staying in the job, Koeman said: “I’m not going to talk about my future anymore.”

He also suggested that with the players he has it is impossible to play any other way than the more direct approach they took Monday night.

“When you see today’s squad list, do you really think we can play tiki-taki (sic)?” he told reporters.

“Barca of today is not the Barca of eight years ago. We play the Barca way but we don’t have the speed in big areas because we have that [Philippe] Coutinho cutting inward and [Yusuf] Demir who doesn’t reach the byline very often.

‘When Ansu Fati and [Ousmane] When Dembele comes back we will be different but they are not fit so we have to find alternatives.”

Barcelona are now seventh in LaLiga, two points behind Real Sociedad in fourth place and five behind leader Real Madrid.

Koeman’s men are now looking for their first win since beating Getafe late last month when they visit Cadiz next Thursday.
