Samantha Armytage lets her dog Banjo practice on a water treadmill

Sam Armytage takes a rather unique approach to helping her beloved Labrador Banjo shed the unwanted pounds.

The former Sunrise host, 45, shared a video on Instagram Stories on Tuesday of the five-year-old dog running on an underwater treadmill.

The chubby little dog, suffering from arthritis in his elbows and knees, waded slowly through the shallows as Sam lured him forward with a treat.

Sam also posted a photo of Banjo in the water tank, taken from the front, with the ironic caption “Will work for treats” and an emoji crying with laughter.

She followed this up with another photo of Banjo at home, sleeping on his bed recovering from what would have been a tiring day.

Water treadmill therapy is used when animals have joint or muscle injuries that prevent them from exercising on dry land.

In August, Sam revealed to fans that Banjo uses the device “a few times a week,” but did not specify whether the purpose was for rehabilitation or weight loss.

Critics have previously accused Samantha of overfeeding Banjo, with some arguing that the dog looks far too large for its kind.

Fans have long expressed concern about Banjo, who appears to be much larger than an average dog of his kind, and begged Samantha to feed him less and take him outside more often to play.

“A good diet for weight loss is super important for this dog,” the vet – who declined to be named – told the Daily Mail Australia.

A healthy weight for male Labradors is around 30 pounds.

Sam welcomed Banjo into her life in December 2016, then revealed that her new puppy was the “best” Christmas present to herself ever.

Banjo has since appeared regularly on her social media pages and even has his own popular Instagram account.

The dog also appeared on Sunrise several times during Sam’s tenure as host, acting as a “witness” during her recent marriage to Richard Lavender.
