The apparent altercation comes after Sam recently pondered their decision to come out as non-binary last September.

The hitmaker Stay With Me said that while it was “amazing,” the decision was also “more of a struggle” than expected due to “all the backlash.”

In a candid conversation with James Corden on The Late Late Show, the singer said it was “very difficult” to see how many people still give so little support to gender non-conforming people and transgender people.

“I’ve always felt this way and being able to tell that to everyone and feel so much more open about certain parts of my personality and my life has been absolutely incredible.”

The Too Good at Goodbyes singer told James: “In a world where I wasn’t a famous person I would have changed my pronouns and got used to it in a normal way, which I was actually trying to do, but a message that I sent to my family was strangely leaked so I had to make a decision to tell everyone and go for it.

“It’s been great, but it’s also very, very hard to see all the backlash and the amount of people who still don’t give such support to gender non-conforming and transgender people around the world.

“It’s definitely more of a struggle than I expected, but I’m comfortable in my own skin and that’s the price and the beauty.”

They explained that by coming out as non-binary, they were able to “show all the different sides of myself musically,” while “definitely feared” revealing their femininity sooner.

The singer first announced that they would come out as non-binary on Twitter last September and said they would change their pronouns to “they/them.”

In a fair wave of tweets, they wrote, “Today is a good day, so here it goes. I’ve decided to change my pronouns to THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender. I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…

‘I am so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people who support me in this decision

“But I was really nervous to announce this because I care too much about what people think, but f*** it!

“I understand there will be a lot of mistakes and gender mismatches, but all I’m asking is that you please try. I hope you can see me as I see myself now. Thank you.’
