PSG were able to beat the competition from Barcelona by signing the much sought-after Wijnaldum, who signed a three-year contract until 2024.

It has been reported that Wijnaldum will earn double the wages Barcelona offered, and boss Mauricio Pochettino also helped get the deal over the line.

“My contract has expired and several clubs have contacted me,” says Wijnaldum.

“When Paris came to meet me, everything went very well, and I wanted to go to Paris Saint-Germain quickly.

Mauricio Pochettino had already approached me at the time to sign me for Tottenham, so I had already talked a lot with him.

“The whole club made me feel like they really wanted me, that played a big part in my decision.”

Wijnaldum left Liverpool after a memorable five-year spell that saw them win the Champions League and take the Premier League title.

He also helped the club win the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, and plans to continue competing for silverware with his new team.

“Winning titles is very important, we all want to achieve that as a football player,” said Wijnaldum.

“And Paris wants to win, it’s a club that has made a lot of progress over the years, having played in a Champions League final, also reaching the last four last season.

‘I like the project and we are building a team to achieve these goals.’

After it was confirmed he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of last season, Wijnaldum – who was given a guard of honour – reflected on his fond memories.

He said: “The only regret I will probably have is that I couldn’t leave with a title or an award, that would be very, very good for me, for the fans and for everyone.

“But everyone knows the conditions we had during the season. It was really hard – really hard.

“But if you look at how we changed it a few weeks ago, I don’t think people would have thought we could finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

‘That’s a good one. I’m glad we were able to get Liverpool to the Champions League and basically put them in a good place when I leave.”

Wijnaldum joins fellow newcomers Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi at PSG ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign.
