  • Jose Fonte and Andre Silva added goals to the display that Ronaldo started

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 112th goal for Portugal when he starred in a routine friendly against Qatar.

The hosts of the 2022 World Cup were given a sobering reminder of just how big the task will be next winter when they face elite opposition.

Ronaldo, who was pummeled by Manchester United team-mate Diogo Dalot, set Portugal on their way before former Southampton defender Jose Fonte came in a second before the halftime whistle.

Andre Silva ended a comfortable evening with a third late.

The build-up to this friendly saw Portuguese boss Fernando Santos get a cheap chance at Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for failing to start Ronaldo against Everton.

Santos said: “He (Ronaldo) is going to the game (against Qatar) because he needs playing time. It’s important to him at this stage.

“The last full game he played was in the Champions League (against Villarreal on September 29). If he only plays against Luxembourg, he has practically 15 days without playing intensely.’

In turn, Santos used Ronaldo against Qatar from the start and as he often is, he was rewarded.

It was a goal in Manchester that put Portugal ahead – and Ronaldo scored against a 46th other country.

Full-back Diogo Dalot was picked and he knocked back into the area towards Ronaldo in the six-yard box.

A Qatari defender completely turned his game around, comically, and Ronaldo would never miss from five yards away, scoring 1-0 before producing his signature ‘siuuu’ feast in front of an excited crowd.

International goal No. 112 doesn’t seem to feel any less sweet and Ronaldo will now be looking at one last burst of World Cup glory with Qatar next winter.

Fonte came into action in the Algarve before half-time to make it 2-0 and Andre Silva was able to celebrate an own goal: 3-0.

But this was all about Ronaldo and a reminder, if Solskjaer needed one, it’s always better to start with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
