PIERS MORGAN: The sight of US border agents’ horsemen attacking Haitian migrants shames America

0

It’s a truly shocking, heartbreaking photo: an enraged American border patrol officer on horseback wrestling with a desperate Haitian migrant trying to enter an encampment on the banks of the Rio Grande in Del Rio, Texas.

The white cop swings the long reins of his horse in an aggressive manner that some believe was akin to beating the black migrant, evoking vile memories of the horrific days of American slavery.

But the officers involved later angrily denied this, saying anyone with “two brain cells” would know they were using their split reins to control their horses in combat.

Either way, it’s a very disturbing snapshot of a major new immigration crisis on the southern border.

And no one was more shocked than President Biden, whose press secretary Jen Psaki described the images as “horrific,” “terrible” and “devastating to watch.”

The migrant, who is holding plastic bags of food, is one of several thousands of refugees who have sought asylum in America since Haiti was rocked by the assassination of its president, Jovenel Moïse, in July, and a massive earthquake that followed in August.

At least 15,000 have gathered in the Del Rio camp.

But the officers involved later angrily denied this, saying anyone with “two brain cells” would know they were using their split reins to control their horses. Anyway, it’s a very disturbing snapshot of a major new immigration crisis on the southern border

Paul Ratje, an Associated Press photographer who took the extraordinarily powerful photo, described what he saw to the Washington Post:

‘I arrive at the scene and everyone crosses over there. We go into the water – a few other colleagues were in the water – and suddenly a police showed up and they were trying to get people to leave. Then Border Patrol agents arrived on horseback and started letting people leave. They had gotten many people to leave the banks, but then people kept crossing the river. There was a continuous flow and [the agents] were like, ‘No, you can’t come in. Go back to Mexico.’ But people said, ‘but my family is there.’

Ratje saw how many of the migrants then tried to run past the border police and aimed his camera.

“Then one of the officers grabbed a man and waved him around a bit,” he told the Post.

What he captured is undeniably a very ugly photo of a very ugly confrontation.

(Interestingly, Ratje’s own take on it, based on what he saw with his own eyes, was not entirely unsympathetic to the agents he felt were “overwhelmed” and deeply frustrated) which has shocked America and the rest of the world and enraged the Democrats as much as the Republicans.

“The humanitarian crisis that is unfolding under this administration on the southern border is disgustingly reflective of some of the darkest moments in America’s history,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson. “If we closed our eyes and this happened under the Trump administration, what would we do? The inhumane treatment of the Haitian refugees is simply sickening.’

He’s right: Had these scenes played out under Trump’s watchful eye, the liberal clamor about what a monster he is would have reverberated around the world.

As always, Biden is getting less censorship from the liberal-dominated media, just as he has with the disastrous withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan and the horrific “wrong” killing of an Afghan family of ten by a US drone strike.

But my main concern about Biden’s handling of this new border crisis is not whether Trump was better or worse than he is at what has been a huge problem for US presidents for decades.

No, it’s that I’ve come to the unnerving conclusion that Biden has absolutely no idea what to do about it.

Every nerve of his liberal political instincts screamed at him to fulfill his repeated election promise to treat migrants more humanely than Trump did.

No one was more shocked by the images of US Border Patrol agents denouncing migrants than President Biden

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki described the footage as

Therefore, one of his first actions as president was to suspend deportation flights that took illegal Haitian migrants back to Haiti.

But his instincts also told him that if he was found too weak at the border, then politics could be just as disastrous for him.

And the double blow of Haiti’s presidential assassination and the earthquake sparked another crisis at the border that made Biden look weak and hopelessly incompetent indeed.

So in a panic, he has now ordered deportation flights to resume and has threatened the Haitian migrants in the Del Rio camp with immediate deportation.

On Monday, Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, went to Del Rio and swore, “If you come to the United States illegally, you will be sent back, your trip will fail and you will endanger your life and that of your family.”

Difficult words, but the truth on the ground is very different.

The AP revealed today that thousands of Haitian migrants are being released “on a very large scale” in the United States — completely contradicting Mayorkas’ words and undermining the Biden administration’s supposedly draconian new stance.

No wonder the desperate migrants, whose reasons for fleeing Haiti’s chaos for a better life are strikingly clear and understandable, ignore the warnings when they know so many others are being let in.

Biden’s mixed messages couldn’t be more shockingly bad.

“Go out—but come in!” is about an equally disastrous immigration policy slogan that any country could adopt — but that’s exactly what America is doing right now.

And as much as Biden would like to blame the beleaguered Border Patrol agents frantically trying to maintain order, making them the target of public disgrace, the buck actually stops at him, as even some of his closest allies acknowledge.

Manny Diaz, president of the Florida Democratic Party, was shocked by the border scenes.

“That image is hard to erase from your head,” he said. “When you’re in charge, everything that happened – good or bad – stays with you.”

These images will stick to Biden, just as Trump’s child dividing cages have stuck to him.

And the current president has only himself to blame.

America is known worldwide as a country that welcomes desperate refugees and gives them a new lease of life.

It is built into the DNA of the country, and there are few more deserving recipients of such asylum than the poor people of Haiti.

But there is a legal process for immigration to the US that must be followed, otherwise total chaos will ensue.

At the moment, that process has been broken by a weak, flip-flopping president and utter chaos ensues.

Biden promised a new humane way to treat migrants, but instead delivered medieval scenes of white US border patrol officers attacking groups of hungry, impoverished black people seeking a better life.

I don’t blame the officers who have been ordered to stop these migrants as thousands of other migrants come in.

They must be as confused as the rest of us.

No, I blame President Biden for causing this terrible mess but won’t accept blame for it.
