Paul Scholes has wondered if Paul Pogba should ever play for Manchester United again after his ‘ridiculous’ elimination against Liverpool.

The French midfielder was named a substitute by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but was introduced to United 4-0 at halftime.

Pogba was directly responsible for Liverpool’s fifth and final goal, scored by Mohamed Salah, after he carelessly lost possession in the center circle.

Paul Pogba was sent off just 15 minutes after coming on at halftime for Manchester United’s 5-0 goal by Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday

And he was then shown a straight red card on the hour for a dangerous tackle on Naby Keita.

Pogba’s current contract with United expires next summer and Scholes said he wouldn’t be upset if this were his last appearance for the club.

He told Premier League Productions: “A disappointing day would be a complete understatement.

“I think we all realize it’s been difficult, I just think the manager got caught up in the emotion of the comeback.” [against Atalanta in the Champions League] on Wednesday evening.

“We keep going back to that game, but you would never do that against Liverpool, they have too much quality.

“I don’t think it was a lack of effort, I think they were tactically set up for this to happen and unfortunately it happened.

“Paul Pogba comes out on the field at half time to try to help the team and maybe get a little respect, try to get on the ball, try to show how strong he is in the middle of the field…goal away.

“Then he is later sent off with a ridiculous tackle. Now you are 5-0 down with 10 men. You should be thinking, if Ole is still a manager there, will we see Pogba again in a United shirt?

“He has caused chaos in recent years. Everyone knows what a talent he is, everyone trusts him, every manager trusts him, tried to give him his head and let him be the player he was.

“But with all the commotion, not signing his contract, almost holding the club to pay ransom, and then he comes up and does something like that.

“It’s not Ole’s fault, don’t get me wrong, but that’s one part that almost summed up United’s performance today.

‘Look, he will probably play’ [again] won the? But I don’t think they’ll miss anything if he doesn’t.

“He’s had countless chances, he keeps saying he lacks consistency, but that’s just… [a lack of] discipline and disrespect for your manager and your teammates, which he did today.”

Solskjaer comes under heavy pressure after a humiliating afternoon in which Liverpool outclassed United. Salah scored a hat-trick after early goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota got the visitors started.

Scholes had seen the shocking performance coming when he gave a sober assessment of United’s shortcomings just minutes after their thrilling comeback win over Atalanta on Wednesday night.

Scholes said on BT Sport: “You celebrate every win, the first half really worried me, people say I’m miserable but I was watching that game thinking about Liverpool at the weekend and playing against Manchester City. [on November 6].

“If you play two central midfielders against them, it’s three or four-nil and you don’t come back.

“It was great to see all the shooting and crossing in the second half, but that first half worried me. They showed great spirit but they conceded so many chances, quality players make sure you don’t win that game.

“Will they play that well against Liverpool, imagine Jurgen Klopp rubbing his hands at home watching that first half.

“Atalanta had too much possession, I don’t think the performance can be good when you’re at home with the two of you, I feel miserable. I kept going back to that first half, which was disastrous.’

United’s next game is against Tottenham on Saturday.
