Nine patients killed after fire breaks out in Romanian hospital’s coronavirus ward

  • Flames engulfed intensive care unit treating Covid patients
  • Hospital had 113 Covid patients at the time, ten of whom were in intensive care
  • Fire is third to flood Romania’s dilapidated healthcare system in a year

Nine patients have died after a fire broke out today in a Covid ward of a Romanian hospital.

Flames engulfed the intensive care unit this morning, with images of smoke billowing from the ward windows.

Emergency services said the fire was extinguished within hours, with some 100 patients being evacuated from the hospital in Constanta, on the Black Sea coast.

It was treating 113 patients at the time, 10 of whom were in intensive care, the health ministry said.

The fire is the third fire in Romania’s dilapidated health care system in a year.

About five patients died in January after a hospital caught fire in Bucharest, the capital.

And two months before 15 patients died in a new fire at a hospital in Piatra Neamt, in the northeast of the country.

There are also reports on social media that some patients had to jump out of hospital windows to escape the fire.

The photos show patients, some of whom are believed to be suffering from Covid, sitting on the lawn by the hospital wearing face masks and blankets to keep warm.

The Romanian healthcare system has long been under severe strain, amid underfunding, corruption – and then the pandemic.

Only one hospital has been built in the country in the past three decades.

Romania also has the lowest health budget in the EU in terms of share of GDP (5 percent compared to a bloc average of 9.8 percent).

After the latest fire in January, the country’s president, Klaus Iohannis, said the tragedy “must not happen again.”

He had called for urgent and ‘profound’ reforms.

The fire took place at the infectious diseases hospital in Constanta, on the Black Sea coast.
