A man has been arrested at gunpoint by police after he allegedly hired a hit man to shoot his ex-girlfriend’s mother at her home in front of her eight-week-old grandchild.

Stuart Daniel Campbell, 29, was arrested Friday while driving his mobile home at Honeysuckle in Newcastle, NSW.

Detectives allege he hired a hit man to shoot Stacey Klimovitch, 61, after the couple’s relationship deteriorated.

Ms Klimovitch was allegedly shot through the screen door of her Queen Street flat at 8 p.m. on June 9.

The retired swimming teacher’s 31-year-old daughter and her eight-week-old granddaughter were also in the house at the time.

Detectives attacked the alleged hit man, 45, and took him into custody in Canberra just hours after Campbell’s arrest.

He is currently being held on an arrest warrant for murder and will be extradited to Newcastle.

Campbell was charged with murder and will appear in court in Newcastle on Saturday.

Devastated friends and neighbors said they had spoken to Ms Klimovitch just before she was allegedly shot.

“I’ve never heard a shot, but it wasn’t a mistake what it was,” a friend told 9 News.

‘Then I heard the noise and the screaming. I tried to call her but couldn’t get her on the line.

“She was a new grandma, and so happy to be a grandma.”

‘I’m going to miss her. Things like this shouldn’t happen.’

The 61-year-old leaves behind three daughters and an autistic son, who requires full-time care.

Other local residents said more than a dozen police officers were on the scene with sniffer dogs as a helicopter flew over.

Chief Inspector Wayne Humphrey described the attack as “horrific.”

“An innocent person opened the front door of a house and was shot in the chest and killed in front of a relative and a child,” he said.

“It doesn’t get any worse.”
