A Navy SEAL died on Tuesday after being fatally wounded during a training exercise on Saturday, according to the Naval Special Warfare Command.

The SEAL Team 8 member was assigned to the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach.

No further details have been released about how the SEAL died. His identity has yet to be released pending notification from his next of kin.

The fatal accident occurred in Virginia Beach and the soldier succumbed to his injuries three days later at Norfolk Sentara General Hospital.

“Naval Special Warfare is committed to supporting the family of the service member and our sailors who have lost a teammate during this difficult time,” Lieutenant Commander Kara Handley said in a statement.

SEAL Team 8 has eight operational platoons and a headquarters. Covering the Caribbean, Africa and the Mediterranean, it deploys platoons of amphibious ships and carrier battle groups to support the US 2nd, 5th and 6th Fleets.

Despite the rigorous training program that SEALs undergo, fatal accidents are relatively rare.

However, in 2013 and 2019, a total of nine SEALs died in training accidents, while only four were killed in combat in the same time span, Task & Purpose reported.
