Using Microsoft Teams on your smartphone can become a lot more convenient thanks to the latest update of the software.
Microsoft has revealed that its users can access apps for its video conferencing service during meetings on iOS and Android devices.
Previously, the apps were limited to Microsoft Teams desktop users only, meaning users can now join meetings when they’re out of the office or traveling.
Mobile apps on Teams
Microsoft first announced apps in meetings for Teams on desktop in November 2020, with the aim of providing users with more customization when using the platform “before, during and after a meeting”.
“With the reality of hybrid work ahead of us, we will navigate new experiences that need to meet the needs of employees who will re-enter the office and those who will remain remote,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post announcing the news.
“Effective collaboration will be more important than ever with hybrid work models – demonstrating the need for collaborative apps that offer the flexibility to work anywhere, on any device. Which is why we’re excited to share that Microsoft Teams apps built for meetings now also supported on mobile with iOS and Android.”
The company added that adding support on mobile will allow users to “stay in the workflow”, using services such as polls, with notifications displayed as a banner at the top of your screen. When clicked, it allows users to interact with content while remaining engaged in the meeting.
Microsoft says third-party apps can also be configured to match the new mobile experiences, noting that this means not all apps will be available immediately on all platforms.
The updates follow a series of releases from Microsoft as it looks set to make Teams a more enjoyable experience for mobile users, especially as many employees around the world are returning to the office.
This includes a recent update to Teams for Android and iOS that allows the platform to read chats and messages aloud on your device. The Immersive Reader feature only applies to content within Microsoft Teams and can even allow users to focus on a specific chat or message, which they can currently do in the desktop version of Teams.
