Manchester United have reportedly entered talks with Real Madrid over a deal to bring defender Raphael Varane to Old Trafford this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate for a new centre-back to play alongside Harry Maguire as the Red Devils try to put together a Premier League title challenge next season.

Victor Lindelof has been Maguire’s regular partner in recent seasons, but the heart of United’s defense remains an area where there is room for improvement if they want to compete for major honours again.

Varane appears to be United’s number 1 target and he has less than a year left on his Real contract. The Spanish club does run the risk of losing the player for free next summer if they don’t cash in on the 28-year-old central defender this year.

However, Real seem reluctant to lose Varane, having also allowed Sergio Ramos to leave the club for free earlier this summer.

Sports post announced earlier this month that the Red Devils will make a formal offer to the LaLiga giants for their French centre-back, after they were assured the player wants to move to Old Trafford.

Now, according to Fabrizio RomanoUnited have been in talks with Real for a week to reach an agreement.

It is claimed that Varane is excited about a move to the Premier League, but respects Real’s desire to keep him and will do nothing to damage his relationship with the Spanish giants.

Sports post revealed that Real’s valuation of £50million for a player with a one-year contract left is still deemed too high by United.

Varane has played for Real for a decade, winning three LaLiga titles, four Champions League trophies and four FIFA Club World Cups with the Spanish giants, for whom he has played 359 times since his debut.

The France international has yet to return to pre-season for the LaLiga giants, who are now managed by former Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti following the departure of Zinedine Zidane at the end of last season.

Varane is coming back to Real’s training late due to his efforts for France at Euro 2020 this summer, where Les Bleus went out in the last 16 leg following their defeat to Switzerland on penalties.

Manchester United have also agreed to sign Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho for £73 million this summer.
