Major outage hits major websites as 911 services go down in multiple East Coast cities

BREAKING NEWS: Major outage hits UPS, FedEX, Amazon, HBO Max and airline websites as 911 services shut down in multiple East Coast cities

A major internet outage has impacted the websites of major retail, financial, logistics and travel websites and appears to affect 911 services in several areas.

Down Detector, a service that detects whether websites are working properly or not, began reporting a string of at least 50 major website outages on Thursday shortly before noon EST.

Among the websites affected were Costco, Airbnb US Bank, UPS, Fox News, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, AT&T, Groupon, Expedia and TikTok, according to Down Detector.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s filing page also had a notice that it was “temporarily unavailable.”

In addition to the above websites, a number of global financial institutions are affected, including Interactive Brokers, Santander Bank, BBVA and BB&T.

Down Detector tweeted that Amazon Web Services and Oracle Cloud are also having issues, but a look at Amazon Web Services’ website shows operations appear to be working normally.

Other websites affected include Microsoft, Evernote, Go Daddy, Vanguard, and a number of other technology or finance-focused domains.

Meanwhile, at least nine counties and three cities in Virginia reported 911 outages or calling problems on Thursday.

“There appears to be an outage in multiple states of 911. The issue is being addressed,” the Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue & Emergency Management said in a statement.

In Campbell County, Virginia, the Department of Public Safety said all services to the county’s E-911 and non-emergency telephone lines have been interrupted.
