A killer has been jailed for at least 30 years for strangling a 16-year-old schoolgirl and trying to kill her stepfather in a Chinese takeaway revenge attack.

Chun Xu, 32, was sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him of the murder of Wenjing Lin, also known as Wenjing Xu, by strangling her at the Blue Sky restaurant in Ynyswen, Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, on March 5.

Illegal immigrant Xu was also found guilty of attempted murder of Wenjing’s family friend’s stepfather Yongguan Jiang.

His Honorable Judge PH Thomas QC, convicted, told Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court in Xu’s absence: ‘You brutally murdered an innocent 16-year-old girl in her own home.

“You killed her as a malicious act of revenge on her mother; Wenjing hadn’t done you any wrong.

“However, you ended her life by strangling her face to face with your hands.

“It left her mother utterly bereft, her only daughter taken from her by you, someone she considered a member of her extended family.”

The judge said there was “no doubt” that the “vengeful and murderous attack” on the family had been planned “well in advance.”

“The revenge motive, cruel, cruel and carefully planned and executed, is clearly a substantial, aggravating feature in itself,” he said.

After the sentencing, he added: “To make sure everyone understands the sentence, you are already in your 60s before you can apply to be released.

“That will be in the year 2051. Just because you can be released doesn’t mean you’ll be released.

“You should never leave prison if it is not considered safe and appropriate.”

Wenjing lived at the takeaway on Baglan Street with her mother, Meifang Xu, and Mr. Jiang.

The trial learned that Xu was a heavy gambler and owed the family £14,000.

He would have visited them armed with a kitchen knife and googled ‘Can fingerprints be destroyed by fire’ an hour before the attacks.

Later, when questioned by a psychologist about his suitability for questioning by the police, he said, “I didn’t mean to hurt the little girl. I wanted revenge on her mother.

“She has often made me angry and not listened to what I say.”

Wenjing’s mother, who spoke to the court through a translator, was in tears when she said her life had been “turned upside down” by the incident.

She added that the whole family is missing Wenjing “terribly” and that she “will be in our hearts forever.”

She said, ‘She was my only child and my best friend. She was my everything, I can’t imagine my life without her.

“I still make her breakfast every morning and make her a cup of tea every night.

“But our beautiful daughter is gone, I can never forgive him.”

Jiang told the court he misses his stepdaughter “incredibly” and spoke of the “scars” he left after being attacked.

Despite not being related by blood, Xu, aka Little Gang, was considered a cousin by Ms. Xu.

The family entrusted him with £20,000, which he said he would send back to China to pay off a friend who had lent them money to start their business in the UK.

However, Xu returned only part of the money and gambled £14,000, which he then began to pay back.

On March 4, 2021, he called Ms. Xu and asked if he could visit them, but told her not to tell anyone about his visit before strangling 16-year-old Wenjing the next morning.

After killing Wenjing, Xu started attacking her stepfather with two knives, stabbing him in the neck and body.

When Mr. Jiang asked Xu why he attacked him, Xu replied, “Money, money, money.”

Mr Jiang fought Xu and went in search of Wenjing. He discovered her lying on her back at the takeout counter.

Despite attempts by the family and then paramedics to resuscitate the teenager, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:59 pm.

Police found Xu in the kitchen after slitting his own throat. He was treated at the University Hospital of Wales before being arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutor Michael Jones, QC, told the court that Xu first came to the attention of immigration authorities in 2015 after raiding a Chinese takeaway restaurant in Merthyr Tydfil.

He applied for asylum in the UK and was invited for an interview in May 2016 but failed to show up.

The court heard that it was confirmed that Xu was never allowed to stay in the UK.
