A marketing assistant calling herself the “herb girl” has built a multimillion-dollar spice empire after moving back in with her parents to pursue her dream business.

Jordyn Evans, from Melbourne, started Mingle Seasoning at the age of 24 from her family’s kitchen after quitting her job, selling her car and putting all her savings into the brand.

Fast forward, the 29-year-old has signed a $2 million deal with Woolworths, with its range now available in nearly 2,000 supermarkets across Australia after the company saw a huge spike in sales, growing 200 percent in 2020.

“People see this flashy deal, but don’t realize it’s all being invested back into Mingle. I’m not pocketing it, I still live at home with my parents and it’s a marathon,” she told the Daily Mail Australia.

“Entrepreneurship is blood, sweat and tears, it’s sacrifice and you have to be willing to sacrifice things day in and day out to reap the benefits.”

Her journey to success was far from easy after failing to pay herself a salary during the first three excruciating years of starting her business.

“It definitely got tough at the end of those three years when money got tighter and my stress levels increased,” she said.

“I put everything in this spice shop while my friends were buying houses.”

While working endlessly to get the company off the ground after investing $40,000 out of pocket, Jordyn started out as a one-man band.

“I was the store delivery boy, the promotion girl in the store giving away samples, and everything in between… I struggled to shut down and have a life outside of Mingle,” she said.

“I drive the van full time, so I often smell like paprika or garlic when the spice seeps through my clothes – not the best atmosphere.”

The idea to start her own herbal range came about five years ago when she noticed the high salt and sugar content, preservatives and hidden artificial ingredients on the supermarket products while cooking.

“I found that the Moroccan seasoning I was using had a whole host of questionably nasty ingredients in it, so I threw it in the trash,” she said.

“I went to the grocery store to find a better herbal alternative, but I couldn’t. I was standing in the herb and spice aisle and noticed that all the brands looked the same and to me were bland and without personality.

“This was my lightbulb moment where I had the vision to create a new healthy flavor brand that was fun, had personality and got people excited to cook again.”

She moved back in with her parents so she could work on her brand in their kitchen. She eventually moved into a commercial kitchen – and as the business grew, they found a manufacturer in Melbourne that now does all spice mixes.

Jordyn said she wanted to create a “healthy, all-natural” herbal range without compromising on taste.

“The big food brands tried to help customers save time on cooking, but they were missing something incredibly important, the consideration of the customer’s health, without compromising on taste,” she said.

Healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. Healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Healthy doesn’t have to be a sacrifice

‘It is possible to make delicious products for a reasonable price where the health of the customer comes first. “Healthy” doesn’t have to be expensive. Healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Healthy doesn’t have to be a sacrifice.’

Mingle Seasoning now offers a wide variety of products – whether you’re looking for ‘Curry in a Haast’ seasoning, ‘Butter Chicken’ or ‘Spag Bol’.

Sugar is the main theme in your everyday table seasoning, especially the table hero, tomato sauce. Who knew that the typical sauce contains 25g of sugar per 100g – a bottle of Coke contains 11g of sugar – which baffled me,” she said.

“It feels quite surreal. This was a long time in the making,’ she said.

“We’re doing our best to shake things up and play in a room with the big boys.”
