Johnny Young Reveals the ‘Saddest Day’ of His Life on Young Talent Time

Johnny Young has revealed the toughest moment during his tenure as the host of Young Talent Time.

During Sunday night’s 50th Anniversary Special, the 74-year-old recalled the death of YTT member Juanita Coco, who died in a car accident at age 17.

“I think one of the saddest days of my life was when we learned that Juanita Coco had died in a car accident,” he said.

“She was something very special. She was a mighty talent. She was a great singer. And she certainly would have been a big star. Unfortunately, her life was cut short,” he added.

In the special, Juanita’s mother Jenny recalled the horrible night she learned her daughter had died, revealing that she felt she should not let her daughter go to a party that night.

“I felt very uncomfortable that night. I just had this horrible feeling, just this horrible feeling – I can’t explain it. I didn’t want to take her.

‘And optionally, [my husband] Pat came home and we took her there. And just before we left, I ran in and gave her another hug and said goodbye.’

She added: ‘That was it. The doorbell rang in the middle of the night. And I was very worried when the doorbell rang at that hour of the night.

“They said it was the police, and I knew right away. I just knew right away.’

Fans watching the show at home were moved by the segment, with many remembering the young singer as their favorite in the cast.

One person tweeted: ‘Tears in my eyes. Heartbreaking, but such a beautiful interview with Juanita’s family’.

Another wrote: ‘Wow, Juanita Coco’s death still makes me cry. I was a big fan’.

Another added: “I loved Juanita, was obsessed as a child. When we “played” #YTT on the playground at school, I was always her.

“I was devastated by her passing and so touched by this wonderful interview with her exceptionally brave family. What a beautiful girl. Her poor parents’.

Yet another said, “Juanita Coco was my favorite among YTT’s ‘last batch’. The devastation her family must have felt is so sad.’

One of the last talents to join the cast, the bubbly Juanita was only 12 when she began to impress Australia with her prodigious talent.

During the duet portion of the show, Juanita was often paired with Joey Dee, and she was best known for her rendition of the hit song La Bamba.

After the show ended, Juanita struggled to capitalize on her Young Talent Time fame.

Tragically, Juanita died in a car accident in Melbourne in 1993 at the age of 17 after attending her boyfriend’s birthday party.

After her death, Juanita’s mother Jenny and her husband Patrick formed The Friends of the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria in honor of her organ donation, while her former high school, St Helena Secondary College, presented the Juanita Coco Award.
