sen. Joe Manchin is reportedly considering leaving the Democratic Party.

The West Virginia Democrat has told employees he plans to leave his party if his liberal colleagues can’t find a way to reduce the $3.5 trillion reconciliation plan to $1.75 trillion, according to left-wing publication Mother Jones. .

If Manchin goes through with the plan, he would switch from Democrat to Independent.

The senator reportedly has a two-pronged plan for his departure. First, he would send a letter to Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, requesting that he be removed from his leadership, as he is currently the vice chair of the Senate Democrats Policy and Communications Committee.

Manchin says he would then wait to see if that showed Democrats how serious he was about leaving if negotiations don’t go as planned. Then, after about a week, he would change his voter registration from Republican to Democrat.

Manchin, along with Senator Kyrsten Sinema, is a key moderate Democrat in the Senate, and their votes remain the last bulwark against their party’s huge social spending bill.

It’s not clear how Manchin’s potential party change would affect his vote, as the only two other independents in the Senate, Bernie Sanders and Angus King, are still in talks with Democrats.

Manchin met with President Biden on Tuesday, as well as Sanders, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the House Progressive Caucus this week to try to find common ground.

Manchin has repeatedly curbed his fellow Democrats’ penchant for spending, warning that this could create a “rights mentality” and sounding the alarm about rampant inflation.

Manchin even challenged his party to elect more progressives if they wanted to pursue the massive spending.

“All they have to do is we should elect more liberals — I think they’ll get theirs — elect more liberals, but I’m not asking them to change,” he told reporters late last month.
