And Joe Lycett recently discovered that his ancestors may also have had a “queer” histories after filming for BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?.

The comedian, 33, revealed that his great-grandfather, Robert Wilkinson, on his mother’s side, had “an intense friendship with a man” that ended dramatically.

“What happened was very dramatic!” Joe Lycett recently discovered that his ancestors may also have had a ‘queer’ histories after filming for BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?

Joe said in an interview about the upcoming episode, “Queer stories from the past are pretty hard to find because they were rarely documented. Robert’s could have just been an intense friendship with a man, or something more.

“Anyway, they had incredibly strong feelings for each other that became toxic.”

The host of Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back also revealed that a lack of documentation about Robert and wanting to stick with a story similar to his own could have given him rose-colored glasses.

“It became difficult for me to see Robert’s story clearly because I had so little to go on and couldn’t figure out how much of his story I was applying my own history to.

“Whatever happened, it was very dramatic!”

The interviewer also suggested that the discovery caused Joe to get “quite emotional” as they also exposed Robert’s mental illness.

‘Mental illnesses are hopelessly taken care of in 2021 – that was it’ a lot of worse in Robert’s time. He had been through terrible times and struggled with alcohol abuse.

“Fortunately, the justice system spared him the final conviction. Interestingly, due to the nature of the information when he was alive, I suspect most of his family was never aware of his struggles with mental illness and the crimes he committed.

“So it felt strange to think I potentially knew more about him than his own children and wife.”

His appearance on the show comes when the television host stormed Steph’s Packed Lunches live on the air in July after being questioned about using a single-use plastic bottle in incredibly awkward scenes.

Joe appeared on the Channel 4 show to discuss how exercise can help you sleep better, but was seen turning off his microphone and leaving the set after presenter Steph McGovern made the comment.

Earlier in the episode, Joe had explained that he had stopped using single-use plastics in his home in an effort to help the environment.

Steph then saw a plastic bottle next to his lounger in a photo near his yard and asked, “Isn’t that one of the bottles you said you wouldn’t use anymore, in that photo?”

After a long pause, Joe replied, “I didn’t know I was on Newsnight…”

Laughing awkwardly, Steph went on to introduce the rest of the episode, as the camera turned to Joe who turned off his microphone and walked off stage.
