Jennifer’s role in Respect – which explores the life of Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin – is deeply personal as the late singer hand-picked her to play the part more than a decade before the film was ever green-lighted.

Ahead of the film’s release in August, the actress-come-singer talked about her friendship with Aretha and how the film came about.

“We met in New York, and one of the first things she said to me was, ‘You’re going to win another Oscar for playing me, aren’t you?'”

“Imagine Aretha Franklin looking at you and saying that,” she continued, remembering answering her, “I can try.”

And although she received Aretha’s blessing, the singer died before the film was officially approved, after a battle with neuroendocrine cancer of the pancreas in 2018. She was 76 years old.

“Sometimes I had to go that deep to do it, and it helped me pull out of my life and it made me understand a lot better why she chose me,” the star said of the emotional display on screen.

Speaking about her close friendship with Aretha, Jennifer shared, “I miss hearing from her because I feel like teaching me about her life. She taught me about life.”

“I still have the lyric chains, so I’ll check them again every now and then. The last time I spoke to her was August 8, [2018] (eight days before her death) and I can honestly say she sang until her last breath.’

The film grossed over £23 million and received generally positive reviews from critics.
