An Insulate Britain protester who blocked busy roads as part of climate change demonstrations has come under fire after it was revealed she embarked on an 81,000-mile journey around the world in a diesel-loaded Toyota.

Emma Smart, 44, was accused of obstructing traffic in Weymouth and Dorchester as part of a climate change protest in May this year.

She was also pictured among the eco-protesters blocking the roads off the M25 in Dartford.

However, the eco-protester, who previously worked as a biologist, came under fire after it was revealed that she and her partner Andy drove 80,975 miles across 50 countries in 858 days in an 18-year-old Toyota from 2012 to 2016.

Ahead of her 2012 trip, Ms Shaw told BBC: ‘It’s a massive scale, it’s taken 18 months of planning and savings and we’re working extremely hard, but here we are now about to start and it’s all very real.’

The couple broke their global journey into four stages and blogged regularly about their travels in their 4×4.

During the first leg of their journey they traveled to France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Belgium.

This was followed by visits to Portugal, Morocco, Western Sahara, Spain and Andorra.

The pair also traveled to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Kosovo during their world expedition.

However, the Insulate Britain protester is now under fire for the… gas-guzzling journey, with some calling Ms. Shaw’s worldwide tour “hypocrisy at its finest.”

One person wrote on social media: ‘This is one of the #InsulateBritain protesters Emma Smart who felt ‘forced’ to stop traffic on the M25 this morning… hypocrisy at its best! 81k miles the journey!’

While another commented: ‘Emma Smart #InsulateBritain merrily rides around the world on a merry holiday with no worries for the #ClimateEmergency

“Now lies on the roads that keep people from going to work… #Hypocrite.”

Another person added: ‘Yes, the same Emma Smart from Weymouth who chose to drive almost 81,000 miles around the world.’

Elsewhere someone said, “Really, what about the planet?”

Ms Shaw told The Sun: ‘The research I conducted before the trip in 2012 concluded that we would be producing 62 per cent less CO2 per day compared to our situation in a shared home of four people in the UK.

“For the past two years I have voluntarily devoted my life to helping people in this country and around the world get out of this crisis that we are all in together.

“With Insulate Britain I have found hope again.”
