Inside the bitter feud that ripped apart Sam Newman’s popular podcast—and how radioman Ben Fordham tried to save it

Sam Newman’s podcast team is torn apart after a bitter behind-the-scenes argument breaks out with his executive producer.

Football commentator Rod Law walked away from the popular Melbourne podcast You Cannot Be Serious 12 days ago, citing editorial differences.

Sydney breakfast radio host Ben Fordham is an avid fan of the show, trying to act as a mediator between Law and high profile podcast hosts, former AFL legends Sam Newman and Don Scott.

Fordham said Law brings a “unique element” to the show and often “aligns them.”

“Sometimes they go down a certain path and Rod will say, ‘Wait a minute, that’s not quite true’ or ‘There’s another side to that’ – which is what I like to listen to,” said the 2GB host, according to the Herald Sun.

Fordham explained that without Law’s input, the podcast would likely become very one-sided.

“Even though I’m not involved in the podcast, I just wanted to know what was going on. That’s all,’ he said, adding that none of the hosts asked him for help.

Fordham said he enjoys listening to the show because it’s “like a roller coaster with no tracks — you just don’t know what’s going on or what’s going to happen.”

He also said he would be happy to join the podcast team if there was a vacancy in the future, but added that it would probably be difficult as he lives in Sydney.

The feud marks a second blow to Newman this year, after his beloved wife Amanda Brown, 50, died suddenly of a stroke in May.

Newman, 75, and Mrs. Brown married last November, but had been privately together for nearly 20 years.

Two months after her death, he told Seven News, “It won’t get any worse for me. It gradually gets better and you just have to get up, remember who you are and persevere.’

Newman played 300 games for Geelong Football Club in the 1960s and 1970s, winning the club’s best and most beautiful medal twice.

He was named in the club’s team of the century and is also featured in the club’s Hall of Fame.

He retired in 1980 and immediately began working in the media as a commentary for radio station 3AW and Channel 7.

Newman was one of the faces of the AFL Footy Show from 1994 to 2018, where he became a controversial figure for his outspoken views.
