Four-year-old twin sisters have both died of smoke inhalation after their house caught fire overnight.

Emergency services were called to Goonengarry’s home, 30km west of Byron Bay, around 4am on Sunday, amid reports that flames had engulfed the property.

They found two little girls, four years old, who suffered from smoke inhalation.

Paramedics performed CPR, but both girls died on the spot.

A woman has been treated for shock.

The house itself was reportedly part of a multi-occupancy community just 30 km inland from Byron Bay.

Police are investigating whether there was a candle in the house last night.

Detectives will work with fire investigators, who remain on site, to determine the exact cause of the fire.

More to come.
