Memphis Depay continued his scoring streak for the Netherlands as they beat Gibraltar 6-0 to stay on track for automatic World Cup qualifiers.

Depay scored twice, including one from the penalty spot while wasting another penalty, to take his World Cup qualifier goal tally to nine – more than any other player on a European team.

Virgil van Dijk opened the score after nine minutes with a header from a corner by Depay and in the second half there were also goals for Denzil Dumfries, Arnaut Danjuma and Donyell Malen.

The result left the Dutch two points ahead of Norway in the Group G standings with two games left to play. The Netherlands will play their qualifiers next month against Montenegro and at home in Norway.

Depay was awarded a penalty 19 minutes into Gibraltar debutant Bradley Banda, but made up for it with a tap from close range two minutes later before conceding his second penalty just before half-time.

It was the fourth win in a row for veteran coach Louis van Gaal, who was brought back to secure World Cup qualifiers after Frank de Boer resigned following the team’s failure for Euro 2020.
