Alec Baldwin’s wife Hilaria on Friday night lamented that her husband’s involvement in the shooting death of a cinematographer on set meant she had ‘lost my voice in this giant cyclone’, vowing that she would not let the tragedy affect them or their relationship.
In a gushing tribute to her husband – which critics immediately seized on as insensitive – Hilaria, 37, provided a deeply personal account of how the October 21 tragedy had affected her.
‘I lost my voice in this giant cyclone of modern day media, social and ‘news’,’ she wrote in Instagram.
‘I stopped speaking because of fear. You always encourage me to speak, use my voice, stay true. You were right and continue to inspire me.’
Alec, 63, on Thursday spoke to ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, in his first sit-down interview since the shooting.

Halyna Hutchins was described by Baldwin as ‘fantastic’, as he paid tribute to her vision and professionalism
Alec said that he was devastated by the shooting, and frequently broke down in tears. But he insisted he bore no responsibility for Hutchins’s death, because he did not bring live ammunition on to set, and so did not feel guilt.
He said he initially believed Hutchins had fainted or had a heart attack, and it did not occur to him until around 45 minutes later that it could have been live ammunition put in the antique prop gun for their Western film, Rust.
‘They kept saying, she’s stable – just as you disbelieve there was a live round in the gun, you disbelieve it’s going to be a fatal accident,’ Baldwin told Stephanopolos.
‘At the end of my interview with the sheriff’s department, they told me ‘we regret to inform you she didn’t make it,’ they told me then and there.’
He added: ‘That’s when I went outside and called my wife.’
The live round that Alec Baldwin fired and accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust may have been a homemade bullet, according to court documents
Photos from the day show an agonized Baldwin on the phone, looking distraught.
Hilaria, mother of six of his seven children, wrote on Instagram about the photo, describing it as evidence of their close bond.
”I am here, I love you, and I will take care of you.’ These were the only words that came to me when we learned Halyna had died,’ she wrote.
‘I remember saying that phrase over and over again. The horrific loss, the torture to her family, and you, my husband, somehow put in this unthinkable nightmare.
‘That moment, etched in my memory, photographers surrounding you, on the phone with me, documenting your agony. I couldn’t be near you to hug you, our connection over the phone, a visual for the world to see.’
Hilaria and Alec Baldwin are seen out in Manhattan on Thursday, hours before the interview with George Stephanopoulos aired
Critics on social media described Hilaria’s post as inappropriate.
‘Someone wasn’t feeling she had the spotlight, it appears…’ said one.
Picking up her remark about her ‘not going anywhere’, one replied: ‘Of course you aren’t Hillary. You would have to get a job.’
Hilaria has frequently raised eyebrows with what critics deem oversharing on social media – then condemning public interest in her.
In response to a series of selfies on Instagram stories, showing her posing in her $1,900 Moncler gold jacket and leggings, noting repeatedly how tired she was, one person wrote: ‘Apparently Halyna Hutchins’ death was a mere blip in #hilariabaldwin’s life and timeline.
‘Back to her selfies & showing off her expensive baubles.
‘When Kylie Jenner does a better job than you of showing respect by dialing back on SM posting, you’ve sunk to a new low, Hillary.’

The Boston-born yoga instructor – who changed her name from Hilary and adopted a Spanish accent in ‘tribute’ to the country where she vacationed as a child, and where her parents now live – also attacked the media for its interest in her.
‘Our public life is one that brings great joy in connecting with amazing people and tremendous trauma when it gets dark,’ she wrote, to her 943,000 Instagram followers.
‘The opinions + monetization of us get loud and overwhelming. I was afraid for you to open up because I’ve seen your spirit crushed, your mental health shattered, your soul in unimaginable pain.
‘Sometimes I wonder how much one body, one mind can take. I don’t want to lose you.’
Earlier on Friday, before the Instagram post, Hilaria was seen with an army of nannies loading bags of Fresh Direct groceries into the family’s SUV.
Several of their six young children were then seen being carried out, and the family drove off.
Alec was not spotted.

The family split their time between Greenwich Village and the Hamptons, where they have an expansive estate.
The day before, Alec and Hilaria were seen near their Manhattan home having a coffee at their regular shop.
Her husband also addressed the mental toll of the shooting, saying he used to find New York City a haven of anonymity, but now found he was constantly scrutinized by the public.
Alec said that his wife had helped him through his distress.
After the interview aired, he posted to Instagram a photo of him cradling one of his six young children.
‘No matter what happens to me. No matter what I suffer. If I win or lose, anything. Anything. No one can take away from me the joy and love you have given me, @hilariabaldwin,’ he wrote.
‘These are tough times. The world is choked with fumes of hate. But you have given me a reason to live. Our life with our family is all I care about. Nothing else. I owe that to you.’

Hilaria on Friday praised her husband for speaking out, and for encouraging her to do the same – despite lawyers saying that his doing so, while an investigation continued, was unwise.
‘You know yourself and wanted to speak,’ Hilaria said.
‘I am proud of you. We become scared and crumble as some speak about us, for us, gossip, conspiracies, ALL OF THE DAMN OPINIONS. Everything gets twisted and turned, torn apart, picked at, even invented.
‘I lost my voice in this giant cyclone of modern day media, social and ‘news’. I stopped speaking because of fear. You always encourage me to speak, use my voice, stay true. You were right and continue to inspire me.’
She then paid tribute to her husband, who she married in 2012 after a year of dating.
‘You and I don’t always get it right, but we have big hearts and we love deeply,’ she wrote.
‘We are completely different in almost every singe possible way, but we are united through deep caring.
‘Alec, we are messy, unfiltered, and wear our hearts, naked, on our sleeves—this makes us targets and we are so sensitive that to hurt us is easy. As much as I want the pain to go, I can’t imagine being any other way. It just is who we are—and who we are together.
‘So I go back to, ‘I am here, I love you, and I’m going to take care of you.’ We honor Halyna and her family. To hopefully figure out how this happened and whatever we can do to make sure it never happens again.’
She then vowed to support her husband, who on Thursday night told Stephanopoulos: ‘Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who it is, but it’s not me.
‘Honest to God, if I thought I was responsible I might have killed myself. And I don’t say that lightly.’

Alec on Thursday blasted both George Clooney and Donald Trump for commenting on the tragedy.
Clooney had discussed how he always checks his weapons on movie sets and shows them to the others there.
‘There were a lot of people who felt it necessary to contribute some comment to the situation, which really didn’t help the situation at all,’ Baldwin said.
‘If your protocol is you checking the gun every time, well, good for you. Good for you.
‘I probably handled weapons as much as any other actor in films with an average career, never shooting or being shot by someone. And in that time, I had a protocol. And it never let me down.’
Baldwin blasted both George Clooney and Donald Trump for commenting on the tragedy. Clooney had discussed how he always checks his weapons on movie sets and shows them to the others there.
Clooney had said: ‘Every single time I’m handed a gun on the set — every time — they hand me a gun, I look at it, I open it, I show it to the person I’m pointing it to, I show it to the crew,’ Clooney said.
‘Every single take. You hand it back to the armor when you’re done.’
Clooney added: ‘Part of it is because of what happened to Brandon [Lee]. Everyone does it. Everyone knows.
‘Maybe Alec did that — hopefully he did do that.’
He was referring to Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son who was accidentally shot and killed on the set of The Crow in 1995.
The 63-year-old actor then took a swipe at former President Donald Trump, his media foe who he impersonated on Saturday Night Live, for suggesting that he ‘loaded the gun himself.’
‘He said that I did it deliberately. Just when you think things can’t get any more surreal, here’s the president of the United States making a comment on this tragic situation.’
Hilaria said: ‘My Alec, I am here to heal any of your pain that I can. I am not going anywhere. Onward to being Alec and Hilaria, messy, emotions strong, but lots and lots of love—until the very end.’
Alec in response wrote: ‘I’m lucky. Sometimes it doesn’t seem that way to me. But having you and our family…I’m the luckiest guy on Earth.’
