After the performance, Greg was visibly overcome with emotion when he told Claudia Winkleman, “People who left us never left us, they come back, they visit us, we can dance with them and they leave again. That’s what it was about.’

In a VT before the dance, Greg spoke movingly about his “disco diva” sister and how he took care of her during her illness.

Greg recalled how Claire was first diagnosed with breast cancer and given “brutal” chemotherapy treatment, but was later discovered she also had bone cancer.

He said: ‘Family is incredibly important to me. I feel very fortunate that we, Emma and I, have formed a family over the years and an extremely important part of the family was my sister Claire.’

He added: ‘It’s one of the hardest things when you’re with someone you love, witnessing their pain and their fear and figuring out what you can do to ease that.

“I think my sister will be very happy that I’m doing this because of her. I hope she laughs like crazy.’

“My beautiful sister Claire always had blasting disco music on, so I wanted to dedicate it to my disco diva sister.”

After the performance, judge Craig Revel Harwood was labeled “tough” by strict viewers for his damning verdict on the dance.

The actor was almost in tears after his couple’s pick routine with partner Karen, but Craig was largely unimpressed with his moves – he only gave them 3.

Before announcing his score, the notoriously tough judge said: ‘For me, it lacked an internal rhythm, very cardboard cut out I’m afraid.

“But that said, the story in the beginning was absolutely beautiful and emotional and the elevators were fantastic.”

Shirley Ballas was more impressed, telling Greg: “I think your disco diva sister sprinkled you some magic dust today because your performance was upbeat, it was moving, you had a kind of party vibe, your lifts were excellent.

“The whole thing for me was just moving so well done.”

Motsi said, ‘I loved the whole setup, the very calm, intense beginning, going up to the energy.

“You had the energy, it was perfect, it looked like a lot of fun.”

Fans were shocked by Craig’s low rating, writing one on Twitter: ‘Okay, I’m not funny, but Craig’s score for Greg was way below the belt’

Another said: ‘Greg was literally dancing for his sister and Craig is everything ‘it was too cardboard cutout’

A fourth responded, “3 from Craig. Bit hard’, while another said: ‘3? Can someone give Craig a hug or a sherry or something?’

In August, Greg joined the Strictly lineup in memory of his late sister, Clare, who passed away in 2016, in an effort to end the stigma surrounding talking about death.

At the time, he stated that there is scarce material to help others who are going through the same heartbreak as their families.

Greg said, “It’s essential. It is important. I try to get people to talk as much about death as they do about the run-up to birth.’

Clare died at age 51 after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, when she started a blog documenting her journey. She was then told that the disease was incurable after it spread in her bones.

Greg also wrote about his own experiences with his wife’s struggles in a series of magazines, which were later published as books.

In the journals, he talked about how unique Clare was and that the family thought it appropriate that she had a glittering coffin.

In a statement about his appearance on this year’s show, he said: “My beautiful sister was a huge disco queen. She left our world almost exactly five years ago in a box of glitter balls. This is for her.’
