Gold Coast influencer charged with ‘cultural appropriation’ after asking fans if she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for Halloween

An influencer has been accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ after asking her followers if she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for a Halloween party.

Sophie Guidolin, 32, posted a poll on Instagram Stories so fans could help her decide, but she has been criticized for being white and Pocahontas and Princess Jasmine are both women of color.

Pocahontas was a 17th century Native American woman whose life story was fictionalized in the 1995 Disney film of the same name. Princess Jasmine is a fictional Arab character from the 1992 Disney animation Aladdin.

About Influencers, an Instagram account that documents social media gaffes, reposted Guidolin’s poll, leading some critics to accuse her of cultural insensitivity.

‘It’s 2021. People have already gathered for this before. What planet do you live on to think this is still okay? Let me guess, it’s white girls making their way as influencers living on the Gold Coast,” one commented.

“The two princesses you just shouldn’t dress up as,” wrote another.

‘Why not just ‘black face’? Would be the same. #fail,” added a third.

One critic noted, “Pocahontas was based on a 12-year-old Indigenous girl who was kidnapped and raped and died in London when early settlers stole her from her land.”

Guidolin removed her poll on social media after the comment.

It comes after Guidolin talked about her love life by confirming that she was reunited with her ex-boyfriend Ryan.

“Are you back with your ex?” asked one fan on Instagram, to which she replied, “Sure.”

Guidolin was previously in a relationship with Married At First Sight star Jake Edwards, but they broke up after only a few months together.
