WASHINGTON — The Elizabeth Dole Foundation has cut ties with Tim Unes, an event planner working on the funeral of former Senator Bob Dole, after the top Senate Republican complained that Mr. Unes had been subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 select committee for his job in organizing the rally before that day’s attacks.

A spokesman for the foundation said Mr. Unes was a volunteer member of the team planning memorial events in Washington this week, including when Mr. Dole lies in state in the Capitol on Thursday and the funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Friday.

Mr. Dole — the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, a decorated war veteran and Kansas native who served 27 years in the Senate and eight years in the House — died Sunday.

Steve Schwab, the foundation’s director, said in a statement that Mr. Unes was no longer working on the memorial events.

“Tonight I notified Senator Elizabeth Dole of Mr Unes’ alleged involvement in the events of January 6, 2021,” Mr Schwab said, referring to the widow of Mr. Dole, a former North Carolina lawmaker. “Senator Dole was previously unaware of his participation and terminated his volunteer role.”

Mr. Unes’s role in preparing for Mr. Dole’s ceremony raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill, including senior Republicans and staffers who believed the presence of a January 6 rally planner under subpoena would distract from honoring the former senator.

In a Congress still reeling from the day’s violence, representatives of Kentucky Republican leader Senator Mitch McConnell raised the issue this week with a Dole liaison, who quickly agreed. that Mr Unes’s role in the event would be limited and that he would not attend the Capitol ceremony, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

Mr Unes did not respond to an email sent to his company’s website.

Mr. Unes is the founder and president of Event Strategies Inc., an event planning company based in Washington. The company’s website describes it as providing “advanced event management and production services for customers and events of all sizes, both in the United States and around the world.”

The company lists major corporations and associations as clients, including HBO, IBM, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, the American Red Cross, and AARP.

The website notes that in 2016 Event Strategies employees “mainly led and staffed the 130-strong operations team for Donald Trump and Mike Pence.” establish its operations department and standards.”

mr. Unes also has long-standing ties to the Dole family. In 1996, he served as tour director for the senator’s presidential campaign and toured the country with the candidate.

Planning memorial events for a political leader like Mr. Dole usually lasts for years and involves dozens of people. When someone lies in state in the Capitol, events in the building are coordinated by the office of the Speaker of the House, in this case Representative Nancy Pelosi of California.

A person familiar with the intention to honor Mr. Dole at the Capitol said that Mr. Unes had not been in the building for practice rounds in recent days.

In a letter dated September 29 to Mr. Unes, the Select Committee to Investigate the 6 Jan. Attack that the paperwork filed for the rally permit listed him as the “stage manager” for the event.

“The investigation has revealed credible evidence of your involvement in events related to the limited committee’s investigation,” the committee said. “According to documents provided to the select committee, press releases, and statements from Women for America First (WFAF), you helped organize the rally at the Ellipse in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, in support of the then– President Trump and his allegations of electoral fraud.”

The letter stated the commission’s requirement that Mr Unes deliver documents by October 13 and appear for a statement on October 25.

It’s not clear what Mr Unes would have said to the commission, but the letter indicated lawmakers were interested in whether he had any knowledge of Mr Trump’s activities; Mark Meadows, his chief of staff; or other White House officials.

“The select committee is seeking documents as well as your testimony regarding these and other matters that fall within the scope of the select committee’s investigation,” the letter said.
