Four passengers were seriously injured, including a child who was flown by helicopter from the island to a hospital in Naples, Italian media reported.

Several other passengers suffered fewer injuries, Italian media said, with the daily newspaper La Republica report that 28 people were injured in the crash, suggesting people other than the passengers were injured.

According to the state television report, the bus plunged about 17 to 20 feet from the road after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The bus appeared to have rammed through iron railings and into some structures as it landed away from where people were sunbathing, but it was unclear if they were huts.

Photos of the scene showed the wreckage of the vehicle on its side at the bottom of a cliff, behind some blue-and-white corrugated iron that is part of the beach resort the bus landed on.

Italian media said some beachgoers instinctively dived into the sea for cover when they heard the loud crash.

The mayor of Capri said the cause of the crash was not immediately known, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Passengers on board the minibus were rescued by the fire brigade, Carabinieri – national police – and other police officers on the scene.

Helicopters transported doctors from Naples to the island and returned the most seriously injured to the city’s hospital.

According to La Repubblica, who spoke to officials, the bus was traveling uphill at a steady speed when it swerved left and right before going off the road.

“The driver may have had an illness: At the moment it’s just a hypothesis, but I rule out that it was a risky maneuver because the vehicle was uphill,” Anacapri Deputy Mayor Francesco Cerrotta told the newspaper.

“Someone would have seen the doctors helping the driver with a defibrillator.”

Helicopters have reportedly taken 19 people to the Naples hospital and all doctors on the island have been sent to the hospital to treat the patients.

The exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined, and an investigation is expected to be opened.
