Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has insisted Naby Keita is ‘not good enough’ for Jurgen Klopp’s side and believes he was guilty of both Atletico Madrid goals on Tuesday night.

Keita scored Liverpool’s second goal of the game at the Wanda Metropolitano – a frenzied volley that gave the Reds a 2-0 lead in the Spanish capital.

But after his offensive exploits, Keita played a part in both Atletico goals, as Diego Simeone’s side scrambled back into the game before Mo Salah netted a late winner.

First, he was too weak and slow to react to a short corner, allowing Thomas Lemar to get down the line and cause chaos before Antoine Griezmann poked home from close range.

He was then beaten far too easily by Joao Felix, who dribbled past the Guinea and played Griezmann through goal to take his second of the evening.

Keita was knocked out at halftime when Klopp introduced Fabinho, although the German insisted his intention was always to take him out of the game after 45 minutes following a hectic recent international programme.

But Hamann, who has made 283 appearances for the Reds, was far from impressed with Keita’s performance, saying he is simply “not good enough” to play for Liverpool.

“I have to say that I think Keita was guilty of both goals,” the former Germany head coach told talkSPORT.

“I know he’s had some injuries, but I don’t think he’s good enough for Liverpool.

“When you score a goal like him you have to be confident, you have to do your defensive duties and I have a feeling he just wants to play with the ball and when Liverpool have possession.

“You just can’t and he’s not good enough for that. The way he was beaten for the first two goals was just too easy.”

After the game, Klopp said: “He played three games for Guinea and the last Premier League game.

’45 minutes was good for him. I’ve talked to him and it’s all good.’

Hamann was also far from impressed with Liverpool’s defense as a whole, with the Reds conceding 11 goals in 12 games across all competitions so far.

The German added: ‘Defensively, Liverpool were quite average as they conceded two and the reason they stayed in the game was because they made two or three good saves. [Alisson] Becker was excellent again.

“That’s something they need to address.

“They won the Champions League and Premier League when they were as good as anyone defensively, but on Tuesday they conceded the chances and goals that were far too easy.”
