A man who committed ‘a parent’s worst nightmare’ when he kidnapped a 12-year-old girl from a Sydney park, then drugged and raped her has been sentenced to at least nine years in prison.

Brett John Callaghan, 39, pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including two aggravated charges of having sexual intercourse with a child and providing a child with a prohibited drug.

Judge Robert Sutherland in the NSW District Court on Friday described his behavior as predatory and opportunistic and sentenced him to a 12-year capital sentence.

In a letter to the court, Callaghan acknowledged the damage he had caused, saying, “I probably ruined her life.”

The terrifying ordeal of more than nine hours for the girl in April 2020 was read out by the judge.

He described the young girl’s disappearance when her mother was due to pick her up as “undoubtedly a parent’s worst nightmare.”

The girl was approached in the Thornleigh skate park on the afternoon of April 28 by Callaghan, who offered to charge her cell phone at his home.

She initially refused but he insisted it would only be “10 minutes” and said he would bring her back.

He pointed to another young child in his car and assured her she would not be hurt.

They drove to an estate in Dural where his parents lived and he lived in the back of a granny flat and offered her “the good stuff” in an ice pipe.

Two puffs later, she felt uncomfortable, tired, hot and cold, and worried about his behavior.

She ran screaming down the 200-meter driveway and a neighbor came out, but Callaghan drove alongside and told her he would drive her home.

At one point he stopped and his victim got out of the car, hit a tree and ran, but “couldn’t see anything” and turned back.

Later that evening, he drove them back to his parents’ house and waited for the police officers present to leave.

At this stage, his victim said she felt trapped in his house and gave up going home.

Back in his bedroom, he sexually penetrated the girl, who later said she was in “so much pain” and that she felt powerless and loved to cry.

When the police returned, he threw a blanket over her and told her not to talk, but he eventually admitted she was there and was arrested on the spot.

Callaghan wrote a letter to the court about his rudderless and drug-addicted life after his dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer were dashed during the Commonwealth Games trials.

After failing a drug test at age 17 and being kicked out of the team, he began lengthy battles with substance abuse.

The girl’s mother spoke in a previous conviction about the “catastrophic” impact the “horrific” attack had on her.

Her daughter’s personality has fundamentally changed, she is plagued by nightmares and no longer smiles.
