A Japanese fighter pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after the cockpit hood of their F-2 jet fell in the air during a mission to intercept a foreign plane.

The Mitsubishi F-2 fighter jet lost its hood, which weighs about 90 kg, while flying over a mountainous area in southwestern Japan on Sunday, Japan’s defense ministry said.

The pilot, who has not been named, was in the middle of a scramble mission in response to reports that a foreign plane had entered Japan’s airspace when the canopy fell off, exposing the pilot to the air mid-flight.

The pilot made an emergency landing at Tsuiki Air Base in Fukuoka Prefecture, where the jets are based, after the incident happened at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Japan Today reports. Another F-2 jet was deployed in place to complete the scramble mission.

Obviously there are no reports of injuries or property damage as a result of the technical malfunction.

Japanese air defense forces have searched for the 150-centimeter-long and 90-centimeter wide canopy that is said to have fallen in the southern city of Asakura.

The jet also lost an emergency ladder, which weighs 1 lb (480 grams) in the incident.

“We are sorry to have concerned local residents and the general public,” the Defense Ministry said. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the technical failure was serious as it could have injured the public.

Yoshitomo Aoki, an aviation expert, told Japan today that it is rare to lose the cockpit hood, but defective parts of the aircraft, or the loosening of those parts, can cause the hood to fall off.

But he added that the loss of the cockpit cover would not affect an aircraft’s flight functions.

Since then, the air defense forces have inspected all their jets at the base.
