Two-time Emmy winner Sharon Gless loaded 40lbs onto her 5ft5in frame to more authentically portray the violent, demented nurse in Misery at London’s Criterion Theater between December 1992 and March 1993.

The 78-year-old Cagney & Lacey alum recalled that she deeply regretted the decision to arrive to play Annie Wilkes in her memoir Apparently There Were Complaints, which hit shelves on Tuesday.

‘When I got it, the [director Simon Moore] said, “We’ll make you a fat suit,” Sharon told Page Six on Tuesday.

“Well, I was just going through menopause. I said, “You don’t have to do that, I’ll take care of that!” One of the dumbest things I’ve ever done in my life.”

By the time Barney Rosenzweig, producer of Cagney & Lacey, husband of Gless, flew to England for the premiere, he didn’t even recognize her.

“He hadn’t seen me for a month, he didn’t know who I was. That made him very upset,” lamented fifth-generation Los Angelino.

‘[It was] the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and I’m sure it’s the hardest thing my husband has been through. There’s no kidding about going through it, you don’t know who you are.”
