The cheek of it! Social media users are stunned as Burberry unveils a BACKLESS trench coat in latest runway show

  • Animal Instinct by designer Riccardo Tisci launched in digital presentation
  • Twitter users were quick to make fun of teasing the brand that shoppers ‘might get cold’

Burberry has been mocked for its latest ready-to-wear collection, which includes a backless reinvention of their classic trench coat.

In a digital show earlier this week, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci launched his Spring/Summer 22 Animal Instinct collection featuring several reinterpretations of the popular trench coat.

In his most experimental Burberry collection to date, the designer sent models up the runway in vintage-style Burberry long coats – cropped at the back to expose their bare bottoms.

But social media users were quick to poke fun at the outlandish trench coat, with one teasing that fashion fans would be “very cold” if they chose to get behind this new trend.

Paired with the jacket, models were sent down the runway wearing matching collars, black leather gladiator sandals and handbags paired with an animal ear themed flat cap

But social media users were quick to poke fun at the outlandish trench coat, with one teasing that fashion fans would be “very cold” if they chose to get behind this new trend.

“Burberry honey, is this a new trend we’re trying here or…???” one user wrote.

Another said: ‘What did the designer of Burberry’s deconstructed trench coat think!? Lmaoo.’

“Riccardo deconstructing the Burberry trench coat will always be emotional for me! #Burberry22,” wrote a third.

Paired with the jacket, models were sent down the runway wearing matching collars, black leather gladiator sandals and handbags paired with an animal ear themed flat cap.

A number of the jackets had a cropped back, exposing the Burberry swimsuit bottoms underneath, while other variations included heavy gold chains, elaborate layering and raw hem finishes.

The revealing coats were featured in a cow print collection, leather corsets, bondage-style collars, sheer glitter cat suits and elf-style prosthetic ears.

Instead of the traditional catwalk, models walked in different spaces that represented “natural elements at Burberry.” These include rooms themed with speakers, raves, glitter and one padded with trench coats.

The collection, which was dedicated to the late mother of the designer who passed away earlier this year, launched with an off-schedule digital presentation during Fashion Month.

Typically a tough London Fashion Week show, the digital catwalk took place between the end of Milan Fashion Week and just as the Paris Fashion Week shows begin.

Last year the brand kicked off London Fashion Week with an impressive outdoor show without an audience, deep in the British countryside.

“To me, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imagination: how we dream to come to life,” Tisci said in a statement.

‘I wanted to move through a series of immersive spaces, each unique and unexpected in their sound, texture and experience. It’s that idea of flashing back and forth between the endless realities and fantasies that we have every day at our fingertips.’

The designer dedicated the show to his mother, who passed away last month, “and to a journey full of new possibilities.”
