BT Sport pundit Joe Cole insists Barcelona face a ‘massive rebuilding’ after being knocked out of the Champions League after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in a snowy Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Thomas Muller opened the score for the Bavarian giants in the 34th minute with a header after a Robert Lewandowski cross and a superb attack from 30 meters from Leroy Sané doubled the lead on the evening just before half-time.

Youngster Jamal Musiala added a third-place finish in the second half as the hosts wreaked havoc on the Catalan giants, who failed to reach the last-16 for the first time in 14 years.

After the game, Cole says Xavi will face an uphill task to get the club back on top of European football.

“This could be a good thing for Barcelona. With Xavi at the helm, he will smash all those who think differently. It’s a massive rebuild,” the former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder said in the studio.

“I wouldn’t say there are three players – other than the young players – they would want to keep.

“So they have to bring in players. As long as the fans understand where they are, we can see them again in two or three years.

“They just can’t compete in the Champions League with that group of players.”

Xavi’s team had to match Benfica’s result when the other game was played in Group E, but the Portuguese giants beat Ukraine’s Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 at home to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Barcelona finished in seven points in the standings and scored just two goals in the entire group stage, appearing in both matches against Dynamo.

The draw for the Europa League will take place on Monday at noon GMT in Nyon, with Barca facing one of the runners-up in the Europa League group, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers as one of their potential opponents.
