Boy, 17, admits he fought for life with one blow to footballer Danny Hodgson

A teenager has pleaded guilty to a one-sided attack that left a promising young footballer fighting for his life in an ICU bed.

The unnamed 17-year-old will plead guilty to grievous bodily harm in Perth Children’s Court on Thursday.

He was held in pre-trial detention until he is due to appear in court on January 20, with a ruling due in mid-February.

The teen is accused of beating Danny Hodgson, 25, outside Perth train station on September 5, while on his way home from the end of the year celebrations.

He was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital with serious head injuries and underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage and skull fracture.

The court heard that Mr Hodgson was “close to death again and again” while a detailed report is being prepared on the extent of his injuries.

A relative of the accused apologized to Mr Hodgson after Thursday’s hearing, The ABC reported.

“I’m sorry my (relative) did that, I don’t know where his head was at the time,” he said.

“I hope you make a speedy recovery and get back to your normal self.”

Mr Hodgson, who was a striker for ECU Joondalup in the National Premier League WA, suffered severe brain haemorrhage and spent weeks in intensive care after the attack.

His parents, Nicola and Peter Hodgson, flew from Great Britain to WA with one exception to Australia’s closed border to be with their stricken son’s bedside.

Mr Hodgson underwent four brain surgeries and a tracheotomy, while also suffering from pneumonia and blood clots.

After 82 days at the Royal Perth Hospital, Mr Hodgson will be transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he will begin rehabilitation.

His parents described the move as a “huge milestone” in a statement dated Nov. 25.

“He has to learn to swallow, drink, eat and eventually talk again and that’s just the beginning.

“His physical rehabilitation will be grueling and we know that for every small step forward there will likely be setbacks.

“But we believe in Danny’s strong spirit and with the support of his wonderful friend Jess, his family and his friends, we know he can make slow and painstaking progress.”

Since the relentless attack, the family has been inundated with messages of support and flowers to aid his recovery.

‘Hi Danny, I just heard about your story, I hope you get well soon. I invite you to come to one of our matches in Manchester, so get well soon, my friend,” he said in the video.

Dean Henderson, Ronaldo’s goalkeeping team-mate, also reached out to the 26-year-old, who he played with early in their career at Carlisle United.

“Stay strong, stay inside, you’ll get through this, I promise,” he said.

“I know how tough you are and you’ll be fine.

“I can’t wait to take you to a… [Manchester United] game and meet the guys. I’ve told them all about you and we’re all sitting in your corner… we wish you all the best.”
