Boris Johnson plans to visit India next month to kick-start trade action ahead of November’s COP26 climate change summit, it was claimed today.

A government official told Politico: “He likes to travel, hear different perspectives and see how countries can be helped to increase their ambition for COP.”

Johnson is set to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January for talks.

But that visit was put on ice amid a winter spike in Covid-19 infections in the UK when the Prime Minister imposed the second national lockdown.

The trip was then rescheduled for April, but the coronavirus crisis again wreaked havoc on Mr Johnson’s plans.

The prime minister was due to undertake a four-day trip, but Downing Street chose to shorten the length of the visit to just one day as the number of coronavirus cases in India rose.

However, Number 10 then decided to cancel the visit completely, as the government added India to the “red list” of travel.

Mr Johnson said at the time that he and Mr Modi’I actually come to the conclusion that unfortunately I cannot continue the journey’.

The Prime Minister said the relationship between the UK and India is of “huge importance”, with the couple speaking virtually.

They promised to meet in person “when circumstances permit, and hopefully before the COP summit in November.”

Johnson would have a fairly narrow window to arrange a visit to India next month, while the prime minister’s schedule already looks busy.

He will host the annual Conservative Party conference in Manchester from October 3-6.

The government will then prepare for the autumn budget on 27 October.

The COP26 climate summit is then scheduled from October 31 to November 12.
