The 28-year-old suffered the injury after being caught on the knee by Lucas Moura leading up to Son Heung-min’s goal.

The severity of the injury increased as Xhaka was facing the opposite direction when the impact occurred. He immediately fell to the ground and later received medical treatment.

Xhaka was then replaced by Albert Sambi Lokonga – making the Gunners boss sweat over his fitness.

Speaking about the seriousness of the Switzerland international’s injury at his post-match conference, Arteta said: “Unfortunately, he sustained an injury and I’m quite concerned as it doesn’t look very positive at the moment.”

Xhaka’s injury will be a blow to the Arsenal squad as they rely heavily on his midfield presence.

Xhaka has been instrumental in Arsenal’s success since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

The 28-year-old is one of the few players to have played a part in both their 2017 and 2020 FA Cup final victories.

Nevertheless, Arsenal managed to hold onto the 3-1 win over Tottenham after Xhaka was forced out on Sunday.

It was the goals of Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka that gave Arteta’s men the victory in the North London derby.

After the game, the Gunners boss admitted he was excited about the result. He said: ‘That’s the beauty of this game and also the danger of this game.

“It was one of the best feelings I definitely had in this stadium. It was a big opportunity for us, a big game, to win it like we did and to feel that connection. It really made it special.’

Arsenal are now in 10th place in the Premier League table after three bounce wins. Their recent form of form marks a complete turnaround from their first three games – racking up zero points and scoring none.

Arteta’s men will face Brighton the following Saturday before they leave for the international break.
