Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka will be out for at least three months after scans revealed the midfielder suffered a ‘significant knee injury’ on Sunday.

The Swiss playmaker sustained the injury in North London’s win against Tottenham, with team-mates all around the 29-year-old concerned.

After being seen on Instagram in a brace on his right knee on Tuesday, scans have revealed Xhaka has sustained a significant injury to his medial knee ligament, with the club aiming to get him back in shape in January in a blow to Mikel Arteta’s plans.

A club statement read: “In addition to an injury to his right knee during Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur, assessments and scans have confirmed that Granit Xhaka has suffered a significant injury to his medial knee ligament.

‘Tuesday evening a specialist consultation was held in London, which showed that Granit does not require surgery.

“Granit’s recovery and rehabilitation program will start immediately and we aim to have him back in action in about three months’ time.

“Everyone at the club will now support Granit and work hard to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Xhaka had only just returned from a three-game red card suspension against Manchester City in August, so this latest news will be a huge setback for him and the Arsenal squad.
