Argentina 1-0 Peru: Lautaro Martinez’s first-half attack seals victory in 2022 World Cup qualifiers
Argentina 1-0 Peru: Lautaro Martinez’s first-half attack seals a narrow win for Lionel Scaloni’s side as the visitors miss a penalty as a further blow to their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup
Argentina are one step closer to qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Qatar thanks to Lautaro Martinez who overtook Peru.
Martinez scored the only goal of the game and gave the two-time champions victory in their World Cup qualifier, although they didn’t have a great time.
Peru missed a second-half penalty in their 1-0 defeat in Buenos Aires on Thursday, dealing another blow to their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

Trailing a goal from Martinez in the first half, Peru had a golden opportunity to equalize when substitute Jefferson Farfan was knocked down in the second half in the second half after trying to evade goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
However, Yoshimar Yotun’s penalty was a bull’s eye as the visitors fell back to a seventh loss in 12 qualifiers.
“Those who take penalties are the big players and the rest is luck,” said Argentine goalkeeper Martinez.
The win moved Lionel Scaloni’s side to 25 points, six behind leader Brazil, who defeated Uruguay 4-1. The top four will automatically qualify for Qatar 2022 and the fifth seeded side will advance to an inter-regional play-off.
Argentina’s Christian Romero was ruled offside after 10 minutes and Angel di Maria missed two good chances, while Peru’s Gianluca Lapadula forfeited an excellent opportunity after skilfully sending in a cross from a few yards from goal.
Argentina took the lead three minutes before half time when Martinez threw a header into the roof of the net.
Peru fought bravely in the second half but there was no turning back after the penalty miss and Argentina ruled out a second goal from Guido Rodriguez two minutes before the end.
