He won a surprise Academy Award for Best Actor earlier this year.
And Anthony Hopkins was seen back to work on Wednesday when he filmed a scene for his upcoming period drama Armageddon Time in New York.
The 83-year-old acting legend was dressed in an overcoat while filming a fall scene on a park bench with co-star Michael Banks Repeta, 13.
Back on set: Anthony Hopkins, 83, was dressed in a black overcoat and suit as he filmed a scene in a New York park for his upcoming period drama Armageddon Time
Hopkins looked old-fashioned in a black overcoat over a charcoal-colored suit and brown leather shoes.
His suit had a red tie for a pop of color and his character wore a crumpled gray hat.
During the scene, Repeta appeared to approach Hopkins, who pointed to him and engaged in conversation for the cameras before sharing a tender hug on the park bench.
Repeta’s costume consisted of an olive green down jacket with slim khaki pants and black and white sneakers.
Dramatic: Hopkins appeared to be filming a tender scene with Michael Banks Repeta, 13, in which they had a conversation before cuddling on a park bench
Few details have been released about his movie Armageddon Time, which is written and directed by James Gray.
The filmmaker is a favorite of critics, although most of his low-budget dramas have fared poorly at the box office.
His most recent film was the science fiction epic Ad Astra, starring Brad Pitt as an astronaut who travels to Neptune to investigate mysterious power surges that have wreaked havoc on Earth and may be related to the disappearance of his astronaut father. (played by Tommy Lee Jones).
The film was a hit with critics, who praised Pitt’s colorful visuals and performance, although the film did not make a profit.
Gray seems to be going back to his roots with Armageddon Time, a coming-of-age story inspired by his early teens growing up in Queens.
As new: Hopkins could have easily filmed a contemporary scene, as his outfit didn’t necessarily betray his historical origins aside from his crumpled old-fashioned hat
The film originally had an all-star cast that included Cate Blanchett, Robert DeNiro, Oscar Isaac and Donald Sutherland, though all four eventually dropped before shooting started this fall.
Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong of Succession are currently attached to the star.
Hopkins is entering a strong year in which he received near-universal critical acclaim for his scorching portrayal of a man with dementia in The Father.
Directed by novelist and playwright Florian Zeller, the film charts his relationship with his daughter (Olivia Colman) as she struggles to care for him after multiple assistants and caretakers abandon him due to his outbursts caused by his deteriorating condition. .
Career highlight: The acting legend is coming off a strong year winning an Oscar for best actor for his drama The Father, which starred Olivia Colman
Dark Days: In the film, directed by Florian Zeller (R), Hopkins plays a man who struggles with debilitating dementia while his grown daughter tries to care for him
Hopkins shocked viewers of the 2021 Academy Awards when he won the night’s final award, the Academy Award for Best Actor, for Chadwick Boseman, who some forecasters expected would win a posthumous award for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. .
But Hopkins was in the UK at the time and didn’t stop to receive his award live via video.
Director Steven Soderbergh, who produced this year’s Academy Awards, revealed to the Los Angeles Times in May that he and his fellow producers had chosen to push back the Best Actor trophy in hopes of getting emotionally closer to the show.
“It is our belief – which I do not think is unfounded – that speeches by actors are more dramatic than speeches by producers,” he explained. “And so we thought it might be fun to mix it up, especially if people didn’t know it was coming.
“And when the nominations came out and there was even the possibility that Chadwick would win posthumously, we felt that if he won and his widow spoke on his behalf, we had nowhere to go after that. So we stuck with it,” he added.
Surprising ending: Hopkins shocked Oscars viewers by taking the final prize for the late Chadwick Boseman, though he mentioned the Black Panther star in an acceptance video he filmed after the ceremony in Wales
Although the ceremony ended in anticlimax with no speech at all, he later filmed an acceptance video from Wales and mentioned Boseman in his speech.
“I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us way too soon,” he said.
Following his critically acclaimed performance, Hopkins will reunite with The Father’s Zeller for his next film, titled The Son, which was also based on a play of the same name and starred Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Vanessa Kirby.
