It’s far from the first time scenes have turned ugly on the international scene in recent years, with regular fines for the worst offenders.

March 25, 2019 – Montenegro – England

Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were targeted by groups of home fans.

Sanction: Montenegro has been fined £16,975 by UEFA for racial abuse and ordered to play one match behind closed doors.

September 7, 2019 – Serbia – Portugal

UEFA has charged the Serbian FA with six violations, including racist behaviour, unauthorized chanting and field invasions.

Sanction: UEFA ruled that Serbia must play their next match behind closed doors and fined the Serbian FA £28,229.

October 14, 2019 – Bulgaria – England

The match was nearly halted after two stoppages in the game when supporters were warned of racist behaviour, including Nazi salutes and monkey singing.

Sanction: Bulgaria ordered by UEFA to play the next match behind closed doors and was fined £63,645.

November 15, 2019 – Romania – Sweden

The match was halted after Swedish striker Alexander Isak was racially insulted by home fans.

Sanction: UEFA ruled that there was no racist behaviour.

July 7, 2021 – England v Denmark

England fans hooted the Danish national anthem before the Euro 2020 semi-final and set off fireworks. A supporter shone a laser pointer at Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as he was about to be awarded a penalty.

Sanction: FA was fined £25,630.

July 11, 2021 – Italy – England

Euro 2020 final marred by English fans making their way to Wembley.

September 2, 2021 – Hungary – England

English players Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham racially abused by Hungarian fans.

Sanction: Hungarian Football Association has been fined £158,531 and ordered to play one match behind closed doors.
