An underground ‘ground fridge’ can, of course, cool your food without needing an outlet from your home – but it will cost you a whopping £15,000 (17,000 euros).
The 300 kg Groundfridge, which is sold by a Dutch company of the same name, is 20 times the size of a standard refrigerator and has enough standing space for two people.
Made from hand-laminated polyester, it has a storage capacity of 3,000 liters – can hold the same amount of food as up to 20 family-sized refrigerators – and can maintain a moderately cool temperature of 10°C all year round. .
It works on the principle that underground structures are sheltered from the sun’s rays in summer and therefore cooler than above-ground buildings, while in winter they are insulated against the worst frost.
A battery-operated fan also helps expel warm air from the outlet and circulate cooler air, so wine, cheese, and homegrown produce from your yard doesn’t spoil during heat waves.
The Groundfridge is suitable for the environmentally conscious homeowner who wants to reduce the electricity consumption of today’s slick indoor refrigerators – as long as they have 64 square feet to spare in their yard.
The company calls the Groundfridge “an innovative version of the traditional root cellar” for today’s sustainable businesses and “cosmopolitans with their own vegetable garden living a modern, self-sufficient life.”

This unique underground refrigerator is made in the Netherlands with enough standing space for two people. The indoor temperature is influenced by local factors such as soil type, groundwater levels, exposure to sunlight, hill vegetation and the average outdoor temperature
The Groundfridge is apparently designed for storing wine, general provisions or fruits and vegetables grown in your own garden – and it has a lock on the door to prevent intruders from helping themselves
The color of the refrigerator door is green ‘to blend in with the landscape’, while the refrigerator housing is white to help reflect the light.
Inside, the giant cooler has four shelves that go around the bulbous interior, although it can be ordered for a lower price without them.
Lucky owners can enjoy unsuspecting visitors to their yard who are in for a pleasant surprise when they open the door to a secret pod filled with tasty produce.
And to keep out intruders, an optional padlock on the door, which is not included in the asking price, can be operated from both the inside and the outside.

Installing the Groundfridge does not require the removal of soil, which can also be buried under sand (although your local authority may have something to say if it is not on your own land).
Installing the Groundfridge, however, requires you to dig a six-foot hole that measures eight by two — a service that’s also not included in the asking price.
During the warmer months, the cooling power is boosted by the additional battery-powered fan that inhales cool air to further lower the temperature, although it will work without this option.

Stairs leading up to the spacious interior unfortunately mean there is no disabled access. No permits are required to put it in the ground – but this is not covered by the eye-pleasing costs

“The Groundfridge takes advantage of the insulating ability of the ground and the cooler nighttime air temperatures,” the company says on its website.
‘As a result, the temperature in the Groundfridge remains stable and cool all year round, the perfect temperature for storing fruit, vegetables, wine and cheese, for example.
‘The lightweight Groundfridge is very easy to transport and install and does not require a permit like a normal basement would.’

According to the Dutch company, the indoor temperature of the Groundfridge is influenced by local factors such as soil type, groundwater levels, exposure to sunlight, hill vegetation and the average outdoor temperature in the country in which it is installed.
It also recommends placing local plants and trees that can withstand drought on the hillside created by the refrigerator to provide adequate shade.
Customers should take into account a delivery time of approximately eight weeks and are limited to a maximum of one Groundfridge per address.
They must also be based in Europe, meaning eco-friendly Americans are missing out “for now,” the company says in the frequently asked questions.
