13 reasons why star Tommy Dorfman came out as a transgender woman.
The 29-year-old actress made the revelation in an interview with TIME on Thursday, saying: ‘For a year now, I personally identify and live as a woman – a trans woman.’
Speaking to novelist Torrey Peters, Dorfman explained, “It’s funny thinking about coming out because I didn’t go anywhere. I see today as a reintroduction of me as a woman, who has made a medical transition.’
“Coming out is always seen as a big reveal, but I was never not out,” she continued. “Today it’s about clarity: I’m a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.’

On the hit Netflix show, Dorfman played the recurring male character Ryan Shaver, who publishes Hannah Baker’s troubles in the school paper without her permission.
Tommy also revealed in the interview why she decided to keep her name during her transition, explaining: “I was named after my mother’s brother who died a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, with an uncle who held me while he was dying.’
She added: ‘This is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy… I’m actually myself.’

Tommy sparked fan speculation about her gender identity in the past year after she changed her look on Instagram and when she recently dated actor Lucas Hedges in New York wearing a sundress.
About her decision to come out, Tommy said, “I’ve been living in another version of coming out where I don’t feel safe enough to talk about it, so I just do it. But I recognize that switching is nice. Why don’t you show the world what that looks like?’
She added: “So I kept a diary time capsule on Instagram instead — one that shows a body living in a more fluid space.”
“However, as a public person I’ve learned that my refusal to clarify can deprive me of the freedom to control my own story,” Tommy continued.
“With this medical transition, my body has been talked about, and it started to feel overwhelming.”
